Del Rio won’t be represented at this year’s State Track and Field Meet, but the city can boast one of the fastest track athletes in the region after this year’s Class 6A Region IV Meet.
Sophomore Zane Hughes finished third in the 200 meters in a time of 21.53 seconds. He finished .24 seconds behind the eventual regional champion, Ikenna Opara of San Antonio Reagan who was first in 21.29 seconds. Hughes was second in the preliminaries, crossing the finish line in 22.10 seconds.
Only the top two finishers in each event advanced to the State meet.
Hughes also finished fourth in the 4×200 meter relay along with Juan “Chili” Peralta, Emmanuel Devonte Reyes and Jovahn West. They finished in a time of 1:29.43.
Hughes also joined Peralta, West and Elian De La Paz to finish fifth in the 4×100 meter relay in 42.71 seconds.
West was fourth in the long jump with a leap of 22 feet, 3.75 inches. He also took 10th in the 100 meters in 10.83 seconds.
Alan Dobbins was fifth in the triple jump after reaching 42 feet, 3.75 inches. He was also sixth in the high jump after clearing 6 feet, 2 inches.
Manuel Padilla took 10th in the discus with a throw of 154 feet, 11 inches.
Perry McIntire was 11th in the pole vault after clearing the bar at 12 feet, 6 inches.
On the girls’ side, Myla Tabora was 14th in the 100 meters in 12.63 seconds. She was also 14th in the long jump at 15 feet, 5.5 inches.
Ariana Erickson was 11th in the 300-meter hurdles in 47.54 seconds.
Emily Torres was 14th in the 3,200 meters in 11:52.27.
Danielle Almanza was 15th in the shot put after a throw of 32 feet, 11.25 inches.
The meet was held in Heroes Stadium in San Antonio April 28-29.
