There were 157 bass anglers battling for $17,000 Saturday on Lake Amistad as part of the Del Rio Chamber of Commerce’s Border Bass Battle.

Cibolo’s Patrick Ogborn took top honors with a 7.35 pound bass he snagged, helping him earn a check for $2,200.

Anglers fight for top honors hourly in the Border Bass Battle. First place in an hour wins $1,000, second place $500 and third place gets a check for $250. Overall winner also gets $1,200.

Kurt Dove, a local professional angler who emcees the weigh-ins and organizes the tournament, was thrilled with the turnout.

“It was really tough fishing conditions with 15 to 20 mile per hour winds but people still came out,” Dove said. “We had people from all over.”

Several anglers came from New Mexico, Oklahoma and one drove 745 miles from Tucson, Az.

After the tournament, Blanca Larson, Del Rio Chamber of Commerce Executive Director, pointed to the sponsors as being the cornerstone of the tournament.

“Rudy’s Country Store and Bar-b-cue have been with us from the start and that means a lot,” she said. “But all of our sponsors have been vital to this effort, because their support is how we draw people in from not only Texas, but Louisiana, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Arizona and all of those represent tourism dollars.”

The sponsors this year were Rudy’s followed by Bud Light, The Del Rio Convention and Visitors Bureau, Coors Light, Miller Lite, Walmart and Arc-Rite Welding and Truck Accessories.
