Arts scene roaring back to life

After a long drought, Del Rio’s Arts scene will be alive and well this weekend.

Casa de la Cultura will kick the busy weekend off with a mural unveiling at Brown Plaza at 6 p.m. Friday.

Lupita de la Paz, Casa de la Cultura executive director, said that the project kicked off more than a year ago. “We had local and out of town artists submit their drafts late last year,” de la Paz said. Then, the staff of Casa de la Cultura and Alfredo Cardenas, the building owner where the mural has been painted, selected the Bianka Santillan proposal.

“This was a special piece and it was selected because it reminds us of the movement that happens here at our very own plaza,” de la Paz said.

Peter III will be opening for Radney Foster Friday night.

An hour later and a few blocks away, one of Del Rio’s favorite sons, Radney Foster will headline a benefit for St. James Episcopal School. Opening for Foster will be local rising star Peter III.

Afterwards, concert goers will be able to attend a special concert attendees only party at Mesquite Creek Outfitters, or visit the Falcon Gallery located at 301 E Garfield Street.

Falcon, who has exhibited around the world and many major U.S. galleries, will have a number of new paintings created during the pandemic.

“I’m just really excited to have the gallery open again and be able to share my art with people,” Falcon said.

While Falcon’s focus is usually on oils, the next day, the Del Rio Council for the Arts show will feature seven different mediums from local artists at their annual judged art show.

Seventeen artists have entered 78 works in the seven categories. Artists will be on hand, along with contest judge Greg Germany throughout the Saturday reception that will be from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

“This will be our second reception of the year,” said Nancy O’Brien, executive director of the DRCA. “However, this one is really special because it brings many artists from many mediums together to look at each other’s work.”

The Del Rio Parks Foundation will have its first Pop-up Beer Garden in more than a year.

The event is more than craft beer, with food trucks and live music from The Family Jewelz.

People will have two choices, they can pace themselves by buying beers individually for $5 each or buy a table for $120. The table option will have 6 seats and 6 beer tickets.

Regardless of your event preference, looks like local arts scene is popping here again.
