Anglers take to Lake Amistad Saturday, Nov. 14 to compete for $25,000 in prizes in Del Rio Chamber of Commerce’s Border Bass Battle, and local professional anglers say the big bass are biting.
“There should be some nice fish caught,” said Kurt Dove, a local professional angler who competes professionally. “Last weekend, there was an event with a 9-pounder caught and a lot of 6 and 7-pound bass caught recently.”
The fishing launches before 7 a.m. with the first cast at 7 a.m. and wraps up at 3 p.m. One thing that sets the tournament apart from many is there’s hourly prizes for the 300 anglers, where someone wins $1,750, $750 or $250.
The anglers will compete on Amistad National Recreation Area’s Lake Amistad, a huge majestic lake that has shores in Mexico and the United States and covers nearly 65,000 acres.
“Last year, we had anglers from all across Texas, New Mexico and Louisiana,” said Blanca Larson, Del Rio Chamber of Commerce executive director. “We see this as not only a great chance for fishermen to come and compete here, but it’s a great chance for us to show off Del Rio and our amazing culture.”
Registration will be at Rudy’s Country Bar-B-Que Friday night between 5 and 9 p.m. and fishing will start at 7 a.m. Saturday morning.
Fishing wraps up at 3 p.m., awards are given around 3:30 p.m., Larson said.
Throughout the day, KDLK 94.1 will broadcast updates about the tournament.
Entry fee to compete for the $25,000 in prizes is $125 and the Chamber expects about 300 anglers to ante up for the event.
The event has been so popular, the next battle is already slated for March 13, 2021.
