Car cruise honors murdered soldier

A number of classic cars, truck and motorcycles will drive through Del Rio Saturday July 18 at 8:30 p.m. in a sunset cruise honoring Spc. Vanessa Guillen.

Guillen was a soldier who was killed at or near Fort Hood, Texas. Her remains were found June 30. She was reported missing to law enforcement April 24, and was first reported missing from her unit April 22.

Brent Saba, the event organizer and founder of Val Verde Classics Car Club, said there hope is to, “Remember Vanessa Guillen, and perhaps make people think about sexual harassment, and report it.”

Saba hopes drivers will decorate vehicles but it won’t be required.

Saba said if people would like to view the cars as they honor Guillen, please practice social distancing and wear a mask.  “Please hold a lit candle and perhaps a picture of Vanessa in honor of her, a life gone much too soon,” said Saba

Saba said the cruise begins from E. De La Rosa St., turns right onto Gibbs St., right onto Veterans Blvd, and left onto Kings Highway and go down Kings Highway and fades off. He asks that drivers begin lining up on E. De La Rosa Street (where Ajillo’s is located) beginning at 7:45 p.m.

All cruise participants are to maintain social distancing requirements by remaining in your vehicle or directly outside of your vehicle, wear a mask, and limit congregating at the meet site to no more than 10 people in a group. Once the cruise begins at 8:30 Saba hopes to adequately social distance in our vehicles during the actual cruise event. Abide by all traffic laws, and give right-of-way any emergency vehicles that may need to respond to any emergencies.

For more information about the cruise, call Saba at 651-307-0378.
