Del Rio’s private sector, City of Del Rio government and Parks Advisory Board teamed up to improve a local Del Rio park at little cost to the taxpayer.
Seventeen local businesses, citizens and organizations bought 21 trees for Casa de la Cultura park.
However, buying the trees and getting them planted are two different things, so a team of eight volunteers gave up their Columbus Day weekend to dig three foot wide and four foot deep holes.
Volunteers diggers were Bruno Lozano, Lupita de la Paz, Gregorio Flores Jr., Raul Ojeda, George De Leon, Javi Gonzalez, Sylvia Ojeda and Joe Joplin. (Editor’s note — Volunteers were from many walks of life. So, out of respect for all, we are not posting any jobs nor community positions, it’s not a sign of disrespect to a few. Read the names carefully and thank them when you see them.)
“This project came together really nicely. It was our first time doing something this big. As far as I can remember, this is the biggest public/private tree planting we’ve had. Once we showed sponsors the plan, it came together very quickly,” siad Peter Ojeda, a volunteer and Parks Advisory Board president.
Citizens, businesses and organizations that donated two trees were Border Federal Credit Union, Jose M. and Rita Rosales, Debbie’s Dog Grooming (Dedicated to AARC Del Rio) and Edson Martinez DDS.
Those donating a tree were Liliana Flores (In Memory of Juan Carlos Flores) Western Air Conditioning Inc., Del Rio Chamber of Commerce and Convention and Visitors’ Bureau;
Ramada Del Rio, Eddie Morales, Mesquite Creek Outfitters Del Rio,Sentry Security Service, Law Offices of Jesus M. Dovalina, Texas Community Bank (In Memory of Cisco San Miguel),
DLP Services, Wash-N-Go Tunnel Car Wash, Brown Automotive Center and the Law Office of Gregorio Flores II.
Types of trees planted near the Casa de la Cultara were 12 Bald Cypress, six Southern Live Oak and 3 montezuma cypress.
Ojeda said there are plans to repeat the project in the Spring. If you’d like to donate, reach out to him at 830-313-1372.
