City officials have confirmed that a low-speed collision on the Union Pacific railroad tracks on Del Rio’s east side today did not result in a fire or in the release of hazardous materials.
Peter Ojeda, the city’s communications and marketing director, said his office was notified about the incident on the railroad by the city’s emergency management coordinator.
“At this time, we can confirm the incident involved two Union Pacific trains south of U.S. Highway 90 near San Felipe Springs Road and Jap Lowe Drive” on the east side of the city, Ojeda explained in an email to The 830 Times late this afternoon.
Ojeda wrote, “According to information provided, both trains were traveling at low speeds. There have been no reports of fire or a hazardous materials release.”
Ojeda said the train engineers were evaluated “as a precaution.”
He said the Del Rio Fire Department, Del Rio Police Department, Val Verde Regional Medical Center Emergency Medical Services (EMS), the U.S. Border Patrol and others responded to offer their assistance during the incident.
Ojeda said, “We are continuing to coordinate with Union Pacific as this develops and will share any additional confirmed information as it becomes available.”
