Community — 70 Val Verde Count students compete in livestock show

The Val Verde County’s 83rd Annual Livestock Show and Premium Auction was held Thursday through Saturday at the Val Verde County Fairgrounds 4-H barns. 

Nearly 70 students competed in 8 categories.

Rabbit

The top three finishers in the lightweight Pen of 3 Rabbits were James Nalley followed by Tyler Church and Bodie Mills. Winners in the heavyweight Pen of 3 were Scarlet Church, Elizabeth Nalley and Benjamin Hester. The Champion Pen of 3 was Scarlet Church, and the Reserve Champion Pen of 3 was Elizabeth Nalley.

Winning the lightweight Single Fryer category was Samuel Rogers followed by Bodie Mills and Elizabeth Rogers. Mills won the Heavyweight Single Fryer followed by Shayden Lee and Nora Dirren. Mills had the Champion Single Fryer and Lee the Reserve Champion Single Fryer.

Winners in the Breeding Doe Rabbits category were Shayden Lee and Kanon Lee. Shayden took top honors in the Breeding Buck Rabbits category followed by Elizabeth Nalley and Kanon Lee. Shayden went home with a car full of hardware, also winning Champion Breeding Rabbit and  Reserve Champion Breeding Rabbit.

Angora goat

The Zuberbuelers took four of the five top spots in the Angora Goat category. Helen took first and fourth while William took second and third. Rounding out the division was Ella Jensen with a fifth-place finish. Helen had the Champion Angora Goat, and William had the Reserve Champion Angora Goat.

The Angora breeding doe category went to Emmanuel Lopez, followed by Ashlynn Day in second and fourth while Clayton Day took third. Donny Guajardo took fifth place.

New Feeder

The New Feeder Market Lambs was won by Donny Guajardo while

Ariabella Lashmitt took second followed by Zoel Guajardo, Gabriel Morales and Kaleb Guerra rounded out the field.

The New Feeder Meat Goats battle went to Jorge Hernandez followed by Arnoldo Rosas, Taylor Kinsey, Aaron Jimenez and Ella Jensen.

Meat goats

It was a tight competition in the meat goat arena. Winning Class 1 was Pasch Gibbs, followed by Hailey Billings, Jorge Hernandez, Conrado Soto and Aaron Jimenez. The Class 2 winner was Ashlynn Day followed by Josue Vasquez, Jorge Hernandez, Hailey Billings and Peyton Henderson.

Class 3 in the meat goats was won by Neal Billings, followed by Pasch Gibbs, McQuade Hartsfield, Neal Billings and Emmanuel Lopez. The Division 1 champion goat belonged to Ashlynn Day and was bred by Bill Taylor and the Reserve Champion belonged to Pasch Gibbs and was also bred by Taylor.

Class 4 was taken by McQuade Hartsfield, followed by Trevor Hill, Ashlynn Day, Donny Guajardo and Royce Hunt.

Class 5 Division was won by Trevor Hill, followed by Josue Vasquez, and Ashlynn Day and Clayton Day won fourth and fifth.

Class 6 was hard-fought as well, with Ashlynn Day winning, followed by Brent Henderson, Josue Vasquez, Gabriel Morales and Carolyn Leija. The Division 2 champion was exhibited by McQuade Hartsfield, and the Reserve Champion honors went to Trevor Hill. Both were bred by Muy Bueno. 

Finewool Market Lambs

The Finewool Market Lambs Lightweight division was won by Scarlett Baker, followed by Alva Baker and Tessla Baker. The Heavyweight division was won by Josue Vasquez followed by Remi Sewalt and Tessla Baker. 

The Finewool Champion was Josue Vasquez and Reserve Champion Remi Sewalt. Vasquez’s breeder was Horwood and Sewalt’s was Stultz.

Remi Sewalt kept her winning ways going in the Finewool Cross Market Lambs category, followed by Trevor Hill, Scarlett Baker and Alva Baker. Sewalt won Champion followed by Trevor Hill as Reserve Champion. Stultz was the Champion Breeder while Mad Dog was the breeder for the Reserve Champion.

Trevor Hill continued his winning ways, taking the Hair Sheep–Lightweight division. He was followed by Kaleb Guerra, Brianna Gutierrez, Kaleb Guerra and Zoey Guajardo. Hill didn’t slow down in the Hair Sheep–Heavyweight, winning first and third. Second place went to Vasquez, and fourth went to Guerra and Gabriel Morales. Hill was the Champion and Reserve Champion while the Hill Ranch was the breeder of both.

First and second in the Medium Wool–Lightweight category went to Reed Hunt, followed by Chatham Hunt, Sophia Flores and Chatham. Pasch Gibbs took three of the five spots in Medium Wool–Heavyweight. Gibbs won first, second and fourth while Remi Sewalt took third and Donny Guajardo fifth. Gibbs was named Champion and Reserve Champion while Estes bred the champion and Mayo bred the Reserve Champion.

The auction brought in $114,410 for the participants.
