Community members will cycle, jog and kayak through south Del Rio on
Saturday, Nov. 1.

Adventure on the Creek is a triathlon put together by the San Felipe-Del Rio Consolidated
Independent School District (SFDR CISD) Education Foundation, a local nonprofit organization.
In this event, people participate by riding bicycles, running and kayaking through areas of
Del Rio.

Participants will meet at Rotary Park, 101 Cantu St. at 8 a.m., then trek through famous
locations in Del Rio, including the Val Verde Winery, Brinkley Mansion, Val Verde County
Courthouse, the Whitehead Memorial Museum and the Cassinelli Gin House.

Peter Ojeda, organization member, said the event helps benefit the school district through
innovative teaching grants and scholarships for seniors. He said this is the fifth year the
organization has put this event together.

Ojeda said the organization has two major fundraisers it hosts annually, with the other being a
dinner-and-auction event in the spring. Ojeda explained more about how the event, which is put
together by the district staff and teachers, helps provide a fun experience for local fitness
enthusiasts.

“It is a fundraiser, but it’s also just a good team building experience for (people),” Ojeda said.

The triathlon will have individual divisions for males and females.

The cycling course is 6.5
miles, the running course will be 2.75 miles, and the kayak course will be 1.25 miles.

The triathlon will also have divisions for relay teams with three members participating in a single
course one at a time. The first member will first complete the bicycle course, then the second
member will continue the team’s efforts on the running course, and the third member will finish
with the kayak course. Ojeda said the relay teams are comprised of students, businesses
sponsoring the event, school district staff and local law enforcement and emergency service
agencies (U.S. Border Patrol, Del Rio Police Department, etc.). Shirts of all sizes will be provided, and all participants will get medals in the shape of a
video game controller. The theme for this year’s event is inspired by video game and arcade
game aesthetics. Ojeda said the organization tries to keep the events fun and interesting by
incorporating different themes each year.
