Community — Amistad March set for Saturday

Ahora y Sempre press release

The Amistad March, a march aimed at raising awareness of people living with disabilities, is March 25.

March is recognized nationally as disabilities awareness month, said Jerry Martinez, the event coordinator. “Disabilities impacts all of us. This is an opportunity for all of us to make some noise for those living with disabilities,” Martinez said.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in four adults have some type of disability.

The last march was held in 2019 and went on a sabbatical due to COVID health concerns.

The Gonzalez siblings Francisco Gonzalez, Martiza Gonzalez-Gillard, and Gabriela Gonzalez-Garz, are based out of Dallas, but Francisco said, “We are Del Rio lovers!” The trio are entrepreneurs and philanthropists. The siblings are the founders of non-profit Ahora y Siempre.

The event coordinator, Martinez, added registration is not only free but the most spirited teams will be eligible for cash prizes for the three most spirited teams.

The march starts at 741 S. Main Street at 11 a.m. and will start and end at that location, Ahora y Sempre’s local headquarters. The organization is the event’s sponsor.

To register, text team name, team captain name, email address and phone number to 214-390-3457.
