COMMUNITY — Big back-to-school fair Tuesday

From staff reports

The 20th Annual Del Rio Back to School Health Fair is Tuesday, Aug. 4, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Del Rio Civic Center.

The event is designed to help local families prepare for the upcoming school year by providing a variety of free services and resources, said Gina McNeal, a Back to School Fair committee member who helped coordinate the event.

Children must be present to receive a free backpack, and supplies will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.

Free school supplies, backpacks, haircuts, agency information and business resources will also be available. Sports physical vouchers will be provided by United Medical Centers for qualifying students with an appointment time. United Medical Centers is also participating in the event.

More than 50 organizations, businesses and government agencies are scheduled to participate, including the City of Del Rio, Val Verde County Sheriff’s Office, Laughlin Air Force Base, United Medical Centers and Workforce Solutions Middle Rio Grande.

The annual event brings together healthcare providers, educators, nonprofits and community partners to support students and their families before classes begin.

“We are trying to make sure students are able to get a great start to the school year,” McNeal said.
