Blood supplies serving the Del Rio area were already at critically low levels before a weekend tragedy in Austin prompted the shipment of 140 units of blood to assist victims, said a South Texas Blood and Tissue official.

A mass shooting outside a popular downtown Austin bar early Sunday left three people dead and 14 others injured when a gunman opened fire on patrons and passersby before officers shot and killed him at the scene.

Kelli Baker, Regional Account Manager for South Texas Blood and Tissue, said they remain on standby to send additional units if needed.

However, she said, supplies were already stressed due to Spring Break approaching — historically a period when blood usage spikes. “With the Austin tragedy, right on top of Spring Break, we really need the support to ensure we meet any and all requirements,” Baker said. “We’re just thankful we have four drives in Del Rio over the next 30 days, a community that always steps up when there is a need.”

Two drives will be held this week at Val Verde Regional Medical Center, 801 Bedell Ave. Donations will be accepted from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, March 5, and again from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, March 6.

Additional drives are scheduled later this month at two local businesses.

— Mr. Gatti’s Pizza, 103 Garner Drive, will host a drive from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, March 20. Donors will receive a $10 Ram Card.

— Texas Roadhouse, 1918 Veterans Blvd., will host a drive from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 25. Donors will receive a voucher for a free appetizer.

Organizers encourage residents to schedule appointments online through the South Texas Blood & Tissue Center website or attend during listed drive hours.

Baker emphasized that even a single donation can help save multiple lives and that maintaining adequate blood reserves is critical, particularly during high-travel seasons.
