The Buena Vista Elementary Longhorns ran wild during the 20th Annual Elementary Cross Country Meet held at Walter Levermann Stadium Tuesday that pitted Del Rio’s elementary schools against each other on the track.
Texas Community Bank and Amistad Tri Ventures sponsored the event while the Del Rio High School Cross Country team organized the event.
Although much of the competition was based on group participation, with the first 25 runners getting points for their schools based on finish. The higher your finish, the fewer points you earned, with the lowest scores winning.
The BVE team won 8 out of 10 categories. Of those 10 categories, they could only compete in 8 of them.

Buena Vista coach Walter “Dutch” Wardlaw said his winning formula is pretty simple.
“When we run the mile, I remember who the fast kids are and make sure they come out to the meet,” he said.
However, he said it was more than bringing the fastest kids. “We have great parent support. Not only in this, but University Interscholastic League as well,” Wardlaw said. “It’s a lot of hard work but a big thanks to the parents for their support who make it happen.”
Winning the award for highest percentage of students running in the event was St James Elementary in the private school category and Buena Vista Elementary in the large school category. North Heights won in the small school category.
