Del Rio is starting to “Go Gold” campaign at a kickoff event for pediatric cancer awareness month from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Texas Community Bank on 401 Pecan St. on Friday, Aug 30.
Go Gold Del Rio is hosted by Brooke’s Blossoming of Hope for Childhood Cancer Foundation, a local non-profit organization dedicated to supporting pediatric cancer research.
Jessica Hester, executive director of BBHCCF, said the organization is dedicated to her daughter Brooke, who died from cancer nine years ago.
Hester said they are inviting businesses from around Del Rio to create events in September to spread awareness on pediatric cancer and raise funds to help battle pediatric cancer.
Hester mentioned the color gold represents childhood cancer awareness, which is why people wear gold ribbons during the month of September. At the event, she will introduce a “Gold September Calendar” for events dedicated to showing support for cancer awareness month.
“It’s been a community wide effort already, and we’re hoping to bring in more people from the community who want to find out more about what we do, what they can do, and how they can get involved,” Hester said.
People are also invited to help make headwear for kids with cancer, which will be given to Frontline Medical Transport LLC (a medical transport service). Frontline will sponsor the headwear and take them to kids battling cancer in hospitals out of town.
Food and drinks will be provided by the Khoury Group (Owner of Ram Country Del Rio, Hyundai of Del Rio, Toyota Del Rio and the soon to open Jeep World of Del Rio, in addition to 15 other dealerships across Texas) HTeaO and the Sleeping Lady Bakery.
