On March 23, the annual Chinese New Year parade will take place in downtown Del Rio to celebrate the new year and honor Chinese culture.

The parade is being put together by Diana Stern and Adva Chattler. Chattler said the annual parade has been going on in Del Rio for 20 years.

Various groups will be part of the parade, including the Del Rio Queen City Belles and Miss Annie’s Straight Up Dance group. Some of these groups will perform traditional Chinese New Year dances after the parade ends.

Chattler said the parade has been a long-standing tradition for showcasing Chinese culture here.

“Seeing the beautiful outfits is very special because the traditional outfits coming from China show all the different dynasties of the Chinese people and their history,” Chattler said.

Although it celebrates Chinese traditions, Chattler said the parade will also include outfits to represent cultures from Korea, Brazil and other countries.

After the parade, the celebrations will move to the area behind the Paul Poag Theatre.

The parade will be on March 23 starting at 1 p.m., and it will begin on South Main Street and East Losoya Street, and end in front of the Paul Poag.

Afterwards, there will be a performance of cultural dances held at the San Felipe Del Rio Consolidated Independent School District’s Performing Arts Center, held at 315 Griner Street.
