More than 50 people paused for a short Memorial Day vigil at the Val Verde County Courthouse Sunday night.

“It’s important that we do this, to stop and remember those who gave their all so we could enjoy so much of what life has to offer us,” said Adrian Bitela, Val Verde County Veterans Service officer, who was one of the event’s organizers.

The ceremony started at 8:30 p.m., and Bitela offered remarks remembering some he served with during his seven-year Army career.

Afterwards, members of the American Legion Honor Guard fired a gun salute and then played Taps.

To wrap the event up, Bitela offered attendees a chance to place a candle on the steps of the courthouse, many with the names of loved ones written on it who had given their lives while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.

“We just want to give everyone a chance to mark this moment,” Bitela said. “Whatever we do, we want to make sure the fallen are remembered.”
