Everyone’s invited to get into the holiday spirit at the county’s Christmas movie night Friday.

This year’s Christmas movie night will feature a screening of “Arthur Christmas,” a holiday tale of how Santa Claus’ youngest son delivers a last-minute gift. The charming animation showcases the voice of James McEvoy as Arthur and Bill Nighy as Santa.

The movie will begin at 6:30 p.m. Friday on the lawn of the historic county courthouse, 400 Pecan St.

Val Verde County Judge Lewis Owens Jr. said hot cocoa and cookies will be provided, plus food vendors have been invited to park in the area. Owens dropped hints that Santa Claus, as well as The Grinch, may put in an appearance.

Owens said the idea for a Christmas movie night was born of a desire to organize more events for the community.

“When we first got into office, we really wanted to involve our citizens, but in order to do that you had to have staff, and I will tell you that through Juanita Barrera, our human resources director, the way she works to get everyone involved, and the whole HR department, it’s something we’ve done over the last few years to bring the community together at this very special time of the year, and that was one of the things I felt was lacking at the county,” Owens said.

“We’re now doing our Easter ‘Eggs-travaganza’ and the Halloween event, and then this event. We’ll be closing down the street in front of the courthouse, and there will be food vendors as well. I just feel like it’s really important to have events for the community to participate in, and the courthouse is beautiful, with lots of lights and decorations,” the judge added.

Those attending the event are asked to bring their own lawn chairs and warm blankets. The weather is expected to cooperate: the National Weather Service forecast for Friday is for partly cloudy skies, with a high in the low 60s and lows in the mid-40s, with no precipitation anticipated.

“Everybody’s invited; come on by,” Owens said.
