COMMUNITY — County completes Alcoa Baseball Field improvement project

Val Verde County recently completed its CDBG Contract 7220479 Recreation & Parks Improvement Project in the amount of $450,000, funded by the Texas Department of Agriculture, Office of Rural Affairs. This project provided for additional recreational facilities to improve access and promote community engagement. Contractors installed lighting, solid sod Bermudagrass, and an irrigation system. All construction improvements took place at Alcoa Baseball Field located on Frontera Road in Val Verde County.

PATMO Services from Laredo received the bid/award March 29, 2022 in the amount of $396,682 for the lighting and electrical. Sanford Waterworks from Uvalde received the award for the irrigation system in the amount of $68,754.68 and received the award for Bermudagrass sod installation March 29, 2022 in the amount of 115,181.69. While construction was in progress Sanford’s Waterworks contract for Bermudagrass was increased in the amount $3,864.50 for Bermudagrass sod installed on the infield.

This Recreation & Park Improvement Activity met the CDBG National Program Objective by benefiting six hundred twenty-four (624) persons, of which five hundred eighty-five (585) or ninety-three percent (93%) are of low- to moderate-income.

Val Verde County contributed a cash-matching amount of $247,962.24 that financed part of the construction services. Additionally, Val Verde County contributed a generous amount of in-kind activities using county personnel and county equipment preparing the site for improvements.

Lewis G. Owens Jr., Val Verde County Judge, stated that Val Verde County is most thankful to the Texas Department of Agriculture for these CDBG funds to provide for improvements to the Recreational and Parks Improvements at the Alcoa Field.
