Halloween went to the dogs Oct. 25 at the city’s community dog park for the 3rd Annual Pet Costume Contest.
“This was the 3rd pet costume contest sponsored by Wash N Go Car Wash. All proceeds from the event go to AARC, the Animal Advocacy Rescue Coalition of Del Rio, to assist that organization in their efforts in providing low or no-cost spays and neuters, micro-chipping and the adoption of dogs,” said Wash N Go owner Sandra Fuentes.
Dog moms and dog dads got into the spirit of Halloween with fanciful costumes for their four-legged “kids” and showed them off on a gorgeous autumn afternoon at the city’s Community Dog Park at Carranza Park.
First-place honors went to the Aladdin Family, with the Priest costume coming in second. Sky from Paw Patrol took third-place honors, and the Fiesta Girl took fourth. Rounding out the top costumes was Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz.
Katelyn Hurta, director of Del Rio AARC, and one of the judges for the event, spoke about one of the group’s major projects, renovation of the former Rathke Veterinary Clinic on Converse Street.
“We have gotten to the point where it is time to tape and float our sheetrock. All our plumbing is done. Our electrical work is done. We had a little issue with our contractor, but we’ve got volunteers who are going to come in and complete the taping and floating of the sheet rock, and then we just have to put our floors in and paint, and we’ll be ready to roll,” Hurta said.
Hurta said she hopes the building will be ready in three to four months.
She said the community can help by making a monetary donation to the organization.
“In the last three months, we’ve spent over $10,000 in transporting dogs to partner rescues out of state, so money is always needed. We have an account with The Bank and Trust here in Del Rio, and people can go there and donate directly to the Animal Advocacy Rescue Coalition account, and that way you know exactly where your money is going,” she said.
Del Rioans can also donate via PayPal, Facebook, and the group also has a Cash App.
Fuentes said after the Halloween costume event she felt the event was a success.
“We were very pleased with the turnout and the quality of costumes and want to thank our judges, Maria Martinez, Lupita De La Paz, Sammy Mireles, Katelyn Hurta and County Judge Lewis G. Owens Jr. We also want to thank our MC, Oscar San Miguel, who kept the event very fun. Thanks also to all the businesses who donated coupons, gift certificates, prizes or cash. We’ll see you all next year,” Fuentes said.
