With the return to school just around the corner, Del Rio’s local H-E-B stores held their annual Kids Day event Saturday.

The H-E-B stores, at 200 Veterans Blvd and 500 Pecan St., held a variety of activities from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., including games, giveaways and unique attractions.

Felipe Cardenas, center store leader at Veterans Boulevard H-E-B, said Kids Day started three years ago and it is an event held at multiple H-E-B locations across Texas.

“We wanted to show appreciation for the kids in the community; they are our future customers. It kind of lines up with going back to school, so we wanted to have some fun events for them,” Cardenas said.

Outside the Veterans Boulevard H-E-B, a dunking booth was put out at the entrance for employees. Sharky’s Shaved Ice handed out refreshments, and a small petting zoo was set up with animals from Miner Farms.

Just inside the entrance, circus-character standees were on display for kids to take pictures next to. Throughout the building, a variety of games were set up, including spin-the-wheel, ring tossing, and dart games.

The theme was a carnival-inspired atmosphere and kids were able to win prizes including puzzles, toys, and back-to-school supplies such as lunchboxes and pencils.

The Del Rio High School’s robotics team attended the event where they showcased robots. The Val Verde County Sheriff’s Office was also present, and members handed out coloring books and pencils.

Carlos Cavazos, top-store leader at the Pecan Street H-E-B, said Kids Day is about giving back to the community and the kids in those community. He said their H-E-B facility gave out free food, drinks and toys and also offered haircuts.

Cavazos said the store partnered with J’s Beauty & Barber Shop to give free haircuts at their location, and families were able to enter a raffle to get free hair cuts for the entire school year.

City firefighters from the Del Rio Central Fire Station on 401 E. Losoya St. brought their fire truck for the kids to look at. Music was provided by Sam Lopez and free drinks were given by Aguas de Los Cielos.

Balloons were set up by Beyond the Decor, and a small train was brought by 3H Funtime Train to give kids rides.
