Community — Local youth get taste of aviation

Little Dreamers Foundation press release

Junior Aviation Day was held Saturday, May 18, 2024, at the Del Rio International Airport, welcoming over 100 children from Del Rio and surrounding cities to learn more about aviation. It included hands-on aviation activities, a virtual reality simulator from the Air Force and free airplane flights for kids.

Pilots for EAA Chapter 1608 in Castroville and Fort Clark Springs Airport brought several general aviation aircraft to conduct free flights as part of the Young Eagles program.

Katherine Perkins, Little Dreamers Foundation President, guides youngsters through pulling a rivet during Junior Aviation Day activities on May 18, 2024.

“Our chapter was thrilled to be able to bring the Young Eagles experience to Del Rio, and introduce and inspire nearly 80 kids into the world of aviation,” said Tim Barrow, EAA Chapter 1608 President.

Little Dreamers Foundation sponsored the hands-on aviation activities, which included learning about the forces of flight, building an airplane, aerodynamics, communication and crafts. “We go to lots of aviation events for kids and wanted to bring it to our community. It was so much fun to teach kids about flying and watch them get excited about it,” said Katherine Perkins, President of the Little Dreamers Foundation.

“The Del Rio International Airport is very grateful for the outstanding and dedicated amount of work that Maria Perkins put into organizing the ‘Junior Aviation Day’ that we were able to host. These events help introduce and inspire children 8 to 17 into the world of aviation and are possible through the generosity of volunteers and hard-working individuals like Mrs. Perkins. We remain committed to promoting aviation activities and support our local community,” said Juan Carlos Onofre, Del Rio International Airport Manager.

Volunteers from the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Chapter 1608, Little Dreamers Foundation, Fort Clark Springs Airport, Laughlin AFB, Air Force Recruiting Service Detachment 1, Pico Aviation (Del Rio), Moses Aviation (Uvalde), DPS Aircraft Operations Division and Del Rio International Airport came together to make Junior Aviation Day happen.
