For people interested in a new place to dine, the grand opening of Chelaz Asadero, Chips & Salsa restaurant will be at 4 p.m. Thursday.
The new eatery is located at 216 Mary Lou Drive.
Chelaz will combine a dine-in facility for people to eat inside, while a food truck will be outside cooking people’s orders. The restaurant will have a variety of burgers, tacos and other Mexican dishes along with its signature chips and salsa.
The Del Rio Chamber of Commerce is organizing the grand opening event.
Chelaz is owned by Ruben and Linda Chavez. Ruben said he and his wife started their business 10 years ago when they began selling their homemade salsa at markets around Del Rio.
Ruben said they also began creating different flavors of chips to go with their salsa, and they also started cooking Mexican-style burgers within the past year in a facility near Lake Amistad.
Ruben said they made the decision to buy a new food truck and open up a restaurant on Mary Lou Drive so they could sell their food in an area closer to the Del Rio traffic.
“We’re excited and blessed and have had a lot of support from the community,” Ruben said.
“The feedback we’ve gotten has been positive, and I think people really like our product.”
Samples of their signature chips and salsa will be available at the grand opening.
Ruben said they plan to have live music on the weekends, and he said they are working to get a license so they can serve beer.
An August Homebuyer Event will be held at Chelaz Saturday, August 3 at 10 a.m., and Jackson Abbey will be performing live music later in the evening at 8 p.m.
Chelaz Asadero Chips and Salsa will be open Wednesdays through Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Fridays from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., and Sundays from 11 to 6 p.m.
