When Del Rio Rams head football coach Rod Taylor took over the program, one of the first things he wanted to instill was a sense of giving back to the community.
Sunday, players and coaches from the Del Rio Rams football team gathered at Bel Furniture to collect and distribute clothing to needy families in Del Rio. Taylor said the plan was to start around 3 p.m., but he said people were already lining up and asking for assistance as soon as the team started unloading around 2 p.m.
“We started sorting around 2 p.m., but people started arriving when we started, basically,” Taylor said.
By the time the clothing drive was completed around 5:30 p.m., Taylor estimated that about 30 families from around the area were helped.
“We helped about 30 families, an orphanage mission in Mexico and even one family that had just lost everything in a house fire,” Taylor said. “About 25 players and a few parents and six coaches volunteered.”
Taylor did not say when the next clothing drive would be, but he indicated that his team would be ready when the time arrived.
“We were left with about 19 bags of clothing, but we donated those to keep moving giving forward. A lot of vehicles blew their horns and waved to show love and support for the Rams,” Taylor said.
The Rams were busy giving back in 2021.
In November, members of the team assisted with the Feed the Line event at the Val Verde County Fairgrounds that provided Thanksgiving meals to first responders in the area. They were also a part of the volunteer team at the initial Feed the Line event in September that provided meals and drinks to first responders and National Guardsmen in Del Rio as part of the effort to support Customs and Border Protection and its efforts to protect the US/Mexico border.
The team also helped with the Val Verde County Sheriff’s Office in its toy drive, and they spent time with residents and staff at Val Verde Nursing Home, visiting and helping with games like bingo.
