Sacred Heart Catholic School held their Grand Re-Opening Showcase Thursday, May 9 at 209 E. Greenwood St.
Julie Ricks, principal of SHCS, said the reason for the showcase was to show the community the many changes the school has gone through, including a new safety fence outside, a new canopy, new water fountains, and upgrades to the playground. She also let everyone know about the new laptops in their computer lab and the addition of chrome books students will receive for their classes.
“This school started in 1900, and this year, the staff and the students have been giving this school a lot of TLC (tender-loving care) so that this place can shine,” Ricks said.
Many people attended the showcase including superintendent Marti West from the Archdiocese of San Antonio, the Mayor of Del Rio Al Arreola and the Ciudad Acuña Presidente Municipal (Mayor) Emilio de Hoyos Montemayor.
Members of the Del Rio City Council and Chamber of Commerce also attended the ceremony, and representatives of Frontera Construction, who helped set up the new fence and canopy on campus, also participated in the event.
SHCS alumni Joey Bolner and Mimi Casey attended the ceremony and gave their testimonies. Bolner mentioned his memories when attending school and thanked the staff who helped him when he was a kid. Casey mentioned her experience with SHCS and said she is grateful to SHCS for giving her daughter Reagan Casey the tools to succeed.
Ricks also thanked Bolner’s daughter, Shay Bolner Sarandos, for donating the new marquee sign in front of the school.
