Dinosaur George and his traveling dinosaur museum return to Del Rio at the Del Rio Civic Center, 1915 Veterans Blvd., on Saturday, May 2, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
George Blasing, known as “Dinosaur George,” is a dinosaur expert who travels the state of Texas exhibiting unique fossils and prehistoric items. He has visited Del Rio for more than 15 years, giving presentations and showcasing his fossil collection in collaboration with the Whitehead Memorial Museum.
Blasing will first set up his traveling museum at the civic center on Thursday and Friday for local school visits. The museum will then open to the public on Saturday. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children. Blasing said 100% of the proceeds, including school visits and general admission, go toward supporting the Whitehead Memorial Museum.
“I’m going to be there all day Saturday, and if there is anybody that wants to ask a question about dinosaurs or prehistoric life, this is the opportunity,” Blasing said.
Blasing said he will bring about 80 fossils to display at the civic center, each accompanied by information explaining what animals they came from.
The traveling museum includes fossils from prehistoric animals found in Texas and around the world, with new additions each year. Blasing said nearly a dozen new items have been added to the collection for this visit.
Among the new pieces are fossils of sea animals discovered in Texas, as well as two skulls of a prehistoric pig found in North America and a prehistoric hyena discovered in China. Blasing said the exhibit is designed to be engaging and educational for all ages.
In addition to the exhibit, a small gift shop will be available, offering dinosaur toys, plush items and real fossils. Blasing said more items will be added Saturday, including new toys, crystals and fossils.
