The Val Verde Regional Medical Center will host a breast cancer awareness event at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 4 at Val Verde Community Center, 1690 Cienegas Road.
Pink Movement is an event organized by Eirin Albritton, manager of Public Relations and Marketing at VVRMC. The event will have workout sessions for people from all levels of fitness and representatives of local resources handing out information for people to take home with them.
“I think it’s an important event because it is the hospital going to the community and reaching out to other resources to bring them all together into one place,” Albritton said.
Physical therapist Abi Fleck Guerra will be in charge of leading the exercise sessions, and Albritton said the activities are similar to exercises held in a physical therapy appointment. Albritton encourages people to wear pink at the event, which is the color representing breast cancer awareness.
The other important part of the event is introducing people to the local resources available to them in the community. Information will be available from the hospital’s Mary L. Pierce HOPE Cancer Resource Room and mammogram department, the Women’s Cancer Support Group and Laughlin Air Force Base.
The cancer research room provides information on helping patients traveling to other hospitals. The mammogram department helps patients connect with the correct doctors and retrieve breast cancer screenings and diagnostic services. Albritton said the Woman’s Cancer Support Group is a “sisterhood of women” who come together and share stories of battling cancer.
Albritton gives more insight on why the resources are helpful for people, even if they may not have breast cancer. She said prevention is key and adds how getting scans on a regular basis and connecting with doctors and support groups is very beneficial to detecting early stages of breast cancer.
