Mayor Al Arreola and members of the Del Rio City Council commemorated the Whitehead Memorial Museum’s 60th anniversary during their most recent regular meeting.

“This organization does a lot for the city, and I’m proud to present this proclamation to the Whitehead Memorial Museum,” Arreola said before reading a proclamation to honor the museum’s six decades of preserving the city and county’s history.

The proclamation reads as follows:

“Whereas the city of Del Rio takes special notice and acknowledges the exceptional historical contribution the Whitehead Memorial Museum has provided over the past 60 years to our visitors and citizens; and whereas, the Whitehead Memorial Museum was established in 1962 and remains the only full-time public museum on Val Verde County, Texas; and

“Whereas, the purpose of the Whitehead Museum is to preserve historical and tangible artifacts of history, cultures and economics of Del Rio and Val Verde County; and, whereas, on October 9, 1962, more than 60 years ago, the Whitehead Memorial Museum was established and has ever since grown and provided history to all; and

“Whereas, the museum has many community events throughout the year and stays busy preserving our history and educating our youth; and whereas, the museum sees about 5,000 visitors a year from all around the world and has shown by its actions and hard work for the past 60 years that it is an asset to the community,

“Now, therefore, I, Alvaro Arreola, mayor of the city of Del Rio, Texas, do hereby proclaim Oct. 9, 2022, in Del Rio, Texas, as ‘Whitehead Memorial Museum 60th Anniversary,’ and I call upon the citizens of the city of Del Rio to come out and take a trip to the Whitehead Museum to learn more and gain knowledge of our history.”

Arreola and members of the city council presented the proclamation to Whitehead Memorial Museum Executive Director Michael Diaz, several museum board members, volunteers and employees.

Arreola acknowledged the presentation of the proclamation had been delayed several times, but added, “We really appreciate everything you all do for the city.”
