The Whitehead Memorial Museum’s Cajun Fest has been slowly gaining steam through the years and is now one of those events people plan their calendars around.
Saturday’s Cajun Fest was a jam-packed night, as more than 400 people filled the museum’s grounds and gobbled up the crawfish, catfish and shrimp as they listened to Zydeco Blanco, a Cajun and Zydeco band based out of Blanco County.
The museum’s board and staff cooked up 450 pounds of crawfish, 200 pounds of shrimp and 120 pounds of catfish.
Michael Diaz, the museum’s director, said the event has been gaining momentum.
“For the past 10 years, we have slowly increased the ticket sales,” Diaz said.
The key for them increasing the overall sales, Diaz said, was increasing the number of reserved tables. “We found that more people wanted reserved tables, so we increased the number available.”
The plan worked, as tickets went on sale March 1 and were sold out by March 8.
Diaz said that without Cajun Fest, there are many museum activities that wouldn’t be possible.
“It allows us to continue with our preservation of artifacts as well as continue many of our free community programs such as free Museum Days in July, movie nights during the summer and events like de los Muertos and Museum Lights during the holidays.
