Council Candidate Profile — Leno Hernandez

Question #1: What in your experience, personal or professional, qualifies you for the position of Councilperson District 2?

“I have been an employee with the City of Del Rio for over 28 years starting at the very bottom as a contract laborer. From there I became a full-time technician serving as technical director where I worked closely with non-profit organizations facilitating professional events at the Paul Poag theatre. As a technician with AV knowledge, I was tasked at assisting with the first video recordings of our local City Council meetings.

“In 2004, I was promoted to director of the Paul Poag Theatre. During my tenure as the Paul Poag Theatre Director I became versed in the budgetary and purchasing processes for the City of Del Rio. I also assisted with applications of Hotel Occupancy Tax funds assisting the administration on creating the funding templates that are used today. When a vacancy at the Civic Center manager position became available I was asked to serve as interim Civic Center director. It was at that moment that I presented the concept of a Civic Facilities Division that placed all the rentable venues under one umbrella which was approved and used today.

“The building confidence of the administrations I worked for led me to filling in short term as interim Main Street and Economic development director where I learned the language of small business in downtown Del Rio. I also served as Public Information Officer and support for Emergency Management.

“In my service, I have volunteered for various nonprofit organizations and civic groups as well as sitting on the Convention and Visitors Bureau board.

“I believe that my 28 years with the City of Del Rio allows me insight that uniquely qualifies me to serve the citizens as a member of their City Council.”

Question #2: What is your vision for this position for the next four years?

“My vision for the position is to recalibrate the culture of the City of Del Rio where common sense prevails, personal politics are set aside and where we focus on getting things done versus stop them from happening. I want to help build a local government that earns the public trust and that the workforce is proud to be a part of.”
