Del Rio police are still investigating two incidents over the past week in which guns were fired near residences.

Del Rio Police Department Senior Officer Dulce Gonzalez, the department’s public information officer, said one of the incidents occurred Oct. 15 in the 700 block of East Virginia Street, and the second occurred Tuesday in the 1300 block of Gillis Avenue.

Gonzalez said in the first incident, DRPD Officer Sheldon Hammack was dispatched to a residence in the 700 block of East Virginia Street at 8:56 p.m. on Oct. 15 “for a gunshot that was heard.”

“The officer arrived on-scene and made contact with several witnesses, who stated they had been sitting outside the residence when they saw a vehicle pull up on the street in front of the residence. The vehicle was described as a black sport utility vehicle,” Gonzalez said.

One of the men who had been sitting outside the residence walked up to the vehicle.

“At this point, several male subjects exited the vehicle and began to assault the male who had walked up to the vehicle,” Gonzalez said.

“The witnesses claimed they attempted to stop the assault, and one of the subjects (who had gotten out of the vehicle) pointed a rifle towards them and told them not to get involved. The victim and witnesses then ran back onto their property, and one shot was heard,” she added.

The shot did not injure anyone, Hammack reported.

The victim of the assault, described as a 17-year-old male, was not transported to the hospital, no arrests have been made, and the incident remains under investigation.

Gonzalez said in the second incident, DRPD Cpl. Gorge Mayorga was on patrol, but stationary, talking to someone near the intersection of West Bowie Street and Gillis Avenue at 10:40 p.m. on Tuesday “when he heard several gunshots coming from the 1300 block of Gillis Avenue.”

“He advised communications what he had heard, and he drove to the location to investigate further,” Gonzalez said.

Mayorga reported he saw several people standing in the yard outside a residence in the 1400 block of Gillis Avenue.

“He checked on the people there, and everybody was fine, no one had been injured, and he requested other units to the area to assist him,” Gonzalez said.

Mayorga reported he spoke to a man who lives in the 1300 block of Gillis Avenue, and the man told him “several bullets had struck his residence.”

Mayorga accompanied the man to his house, where he found seven bullet holes in the residence. Mayorga reported he took photos and noted bullet casings were recovered from the scene.

Gonzalez said the incident also remains under investigation by the police department’s criminal investigations division.
