Sheriff’s deputies on Tuesday recovered a body from the Rio Grande arm of Lake Amistad.

A man fishing in the waters of the Rio Grande arm of the reservoir near Marker 28, discovered the body close to the United States side of the river and notified the Val Verde County Sheriff’s Office, VVSO Lt. Joe Faz said Friday.

The fisherman called the sheriff’s office about 3 p.m. Tuesday, Faz said.

Members of the National Park Service, the Border Patrol and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department game wardens assisted sheriff’s office deputies dispatched to the site where the body was found in the recovery effort.

“When the deputies arrived on-scene, they observed a body in the water, close to the bank. The body was that of a deceased male,” Faz said.

Deputies checked the body for obvious signs of foul play, but Faz said noted the body was in an advanced state of decomposition.

An autopsy was ordered, and the body was transported to the Webb County Medical Examiner’s Office. The medical examiner will determine the cause and manner of death.

Results of the autopsy won’t be known for several weeks, Faz said.

Faz said no identification was found on the dead man, but added a Cuban passport and a Cuban identification card were found near the body.

Faz said the medical examiner’s office typically handles further identification of the body.

Faz asked anyone who might have information about the dead man to contact the sheriff’s office criminal investigations division at 830-774-7513.
