Del Rio’s San Felipe Lions bring Thanksgiving to 80 families

There may be a world wide pandemic, but the San Felipe Lions don’t halt their generous ways.
“When there is a need, we try to always be there for our community,” said Joshua Overfelt, San Felipe Lions social media coordinator and marketing manager .
Ensuring needy families have a Thanksgiving is a priority for the civic organization.
Tuesday Nov. 24, members of the club distributed 55 Thanksgiving baskets and turkeys to families that had hit hard times during the pandemic. In addition to the baskets, the club donated 25 turkeys to families of Cardwell Headstart.
“For us as members of the San Felipe Lions Club to be able to help those in need in our community, even in the middle of this pandemic, is great,” said Juan Garcia, Chairperson of the Thanksgiving project. “This is just one example out of many that we do to fulfill our mission of ‘We Serve’.”
The Lions couldn’t have pulled the project off without support of the community. “The San Felipe Lions would like to thank Sacred Heart School for donating the canned goods for the baskets as well as Julio’s Corn Chips for donating the cardboard boxes and bags of chips,” Garcia said.
The Lions aren’t an organization that does something nice at Thanksgiving and Christmas, and then kicks back for the rest of the year.
With more than 80 members, the club provides a variety of charity to the community from eyeglass assistance, medical travel expense assistance and Thanksgiving baskets to over $50,000 in scholarships for local high school seniors and Southwest Texas Junior College and Sul Ross State University students.
