Fourteen candidates have filed for places on the March 2024 Democratic Party Primary Election ballot, seven of them seeking the nomination for one position.
Seven candidates are seeking the Democratic Party nomination for the office of County Commissioner Pct. 1. The candidates are, in order of filing, Sergio Rodriguez, Enrique R. Treviño, Kerr Wardlaw, Sergio Diaz, David Allen Medina, Carlos Charlie Robles and Bruno Lozano.
The Democrat who currently holds the seat, Martin Wardlaw, has announced he will not seek re-election.
The winner of the seven-way race for the Democratic Party nomination for the County Commissioner Pct. 1 seat will face the winner of the Republican Party nomination in the November 2024 General Election.
A third candidate, who has filed his declaration of intent to run as an Independent for the County Commissioner Pct. 1 position, may also be on the November ballot.
Filing for local elected offices to be decided by county voters in 2024 began Nov. 11 and ended Dec. 11.
Val Verde County Democratic Party Chair Rosalinda Hernandez hosted a get-together at her home in south Del Rio for an end-of-filing day event Monday evening.
Of the other seven candidates who have filed applications for places on the Democratic Party Primary Election ballot, six are incumbents seeking re-election.
These include Joe Frank Martinez, who is seeking re-election to the office of County Sheriff; David Martinez, who is seeking re-election to the office of County Attorney; and Elodia “Loly” Garcia, who is seeking re-election to the office of County Tax Assessor Collector.
Other incumbents seeking re-election as Democrats are Dionicio “Nicho” Trevino, who is seeking another term as Constable Pct. 1; Daniel Reyes Jr., who is seeking another term as Constable Pct. 2; and Gerardo “Jerry” Hernandez, who is seeking another term as Constable Pct. 4.
Of those six, only Garcia has drawn an opponent on the Democratic Party Primary Election ballot. Maite H. Rivera has also filed as a candidate for the County Tax Assessor Collector position.
