Abram Rodriguez, president-elect of the Del Rio Rotary Club, said the project started two years ago when the organization’s previous president, Eddie Amezcua Jr., was in talks to adopt the pocket park from the city of Del Rio.

Rodriguez said the first and main objective of acquiring the pocket park was to install public restrooms to be available for use in the downtown area.

The project has been ongoing and was continued by Rotary’s current president, Mike Coplan. With the contributions the Rotary Club received, public benches were added to the park.

Rodriguez said the club also received a grant from its regional group Rotary District 5840 and donations from the city of Del Rio, Friends of Val Verde Health and Wellness, T J Moore Lumber Yard, Central Glass & Mirror and DLP Services. Other funding came from previous Rotary Club events, including the annual Independence Day Rodeo.

“Everything seemed to be going as planned. We’ve been getting great assistance from companies like T J Moore and the city of Del Rio,” Rodriguez said. “(The city of Del Rio) let us adopt it, and they helped with setting up electricity and installing plumbing, which was huge for getting this accomplished.”

Rodriguez said there is nothing specific set up yet, but the Rotary Club does have future plans to continue beautifying the park.
