Early voting in underway at City Hall in a runoff election for an at-large seat on the Del Rio City Council.
The runoff election will determine the winner in the Councilperson At-Large, Place A race between the top two vote-getters: the incumbent, Diana Bejarano Salgado and former Del Rio police officer Steven T. Webb.
Following the Nov. 3 General Election, City Secretary Mari Acosta explained neither Salgado nor Webb nor a third candidate in the race, Maria Bosquez, gained more than 50% plus one of the ballots cast in the race, necessitating the runoff between Salgado and Webb, the top two vote-getters.
Acosta said at the time the necessity for the runoff election in the Councilperson At-Large, Place A race is dictated by the city charter.
Acosta explained the charter requires election to the council by a “majority vote of the voters voting at such election.” She said the requirement in the city charter means a candidate must receive 50 percent plus one ballot of the total ballots cast in the race.
Early voting in the runoff began Dec. 2 and will continue until 7 p.m. Dec. 15.
Early votes may be cast between 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, and from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 14, and Tuesday, Dec. 15.
