A workshop for the design of a new community skate park was held at City Hall on Friday, June 21.
The Del Rio Skate Park Community Design Workshop introduced three designs for a new skate park planned to be built at the San Felipe Skate Park at 895 W. De La Rosa St.
The park is being designed by Skate Ecosystems, LLC, and is being created to attract new skaters, as well as appeal to those who currently enjoy the sport. It will be the first “Skate Garden” in the U.S., combining architectural designs and an eco-friendly site plan to limit the heat-island effect.
Shane Yee, chief design officer of Skate Ecosystems LLC, hosted the workshop and explained the different park designs to those who attended the session. Yee said his firm and the city want to have the park completed by October 2024.
Yee elaborated on how excited he was about the park and said he wants to submit the design for awards, including the American Institute of Architects (AIA).
City Operations and Compliance Auditor Scot Carcasi said the city of Del Rio employees saw the designs a week prior to the workshop and were impressed. He said the city wants to move the skate park equipment in the city’s existing skate park to another location, so the city’s skaters can use a park temporarily while the new one is being built.
“We’re super anxious to get the feedback from tonight to see what the final product ends up being,” Carcasi said.
People showed up to the workshop, including local skaters and community supporters. Trey Elias, a local skater whose friends say is the “greatest skater in Del Rio,” said he liked the park designs they were shown. He said a new skate park needs to be easy for beginners to use and enjoyable for more advanced skaters to practice in.
Joel Arredondo, a local skater, said he heard about the workshop from all his friends. He also agrees with Elias and said a new skate park needs to be good for beginners and experienced skaters to use.
Yee said he wants people to give feedback about the park designs through an online survey. He said the City of Del Rio will release the results through its social media.
