Fourth of July activities set

Del Rio will be celebrating the Fourth of July weekend with four days of music, sports and outdoor activities. 

Several events for the patriotic holiday will be sponsored by the city of Del Rio and other local entities and will begin Wednesday, July 3, and continue to Saturday, July 6. 

 The first event begins on Wednesday with the Paul Revere Night Fun Run, which will be a 1k and 5k night run, beginning at the Rotary Club Pocket Park, 614 S. Main St., starting at 7:30 p.m. The entry fee will be $15, and the event is co-sponsored by the city of Del Rio and the Del Rio PTSD Awareness organization.

 

The first event on Thursday, July 4, will be the Chalk the Walk, sponsored by the Del Rio Downtown Association, which will start at 9 a.m. on South Main Street.

The annual Fourth of July Parade begins at 10 a.m. Thursday, starting at South Main and Ogden Streets and ending at South Main and Nicholson Streets. Community Services Director Esme Meza said there is no fee for joining the parade, but prospective entrants are asked to submit a form on the city of Del Rio Facebook page. 

Later Thursday, there will be the Free Throw Contest at 12 p.m. at the Joe Ramos Gym. Both boys and girls can sign up, and Meza said it is a fun event where a lot of people show up and cheer on the contestants. More information is here .  

Also, at the Joe Ramos Gym, there will be a Three Point Shoot Out contest starting at 7:15 p.m. 

Still on the same day, there will be the annual Freedom Fest  featuring performances at the Dr. Alfredo Amphitheater and Moore Park. At the amphitheater, the group San Antonio Transit will perform at 6:30 p.m. and the King Cabbage Brass Band will perform at 8:30 p.m. And at Moore Park, Nightlife Tejano Band will perform at 4:30 p.m., Xtremo will perform at 6:30 p.m., and David Marez will perform at 8:30 p.m. 

A map of event sites is available on the city’s website for the layout of the Freedom Fest performances, and in the evening, the annual fireworks display will start at 10 p.m. at the golf course. 

Freedom Fest continues the next day, Friday, July 5. At Moore Park, Eztilo will perform at 5:40 p.m., the Art Tigerina Band will perform at 7:30 p.m., and Los Palominos will perform at 9:30 p.m. At Moore Park, Clifton Castle will perform at 4:30 p.m., Noah Curtis will perform at 6:30 p.m., and Hurakarrana will perform at 8:30 p.m.

 More events will take place Saturday, July 6 including a Flag Football Tournament starting at 8 a.m. and taking place at Nixon Complex (formerly the Field of Our Dreams) located off Kings Way on the city’s north side. The event is sponsored by the city of Del Rio, and the entry fee is $50 per team. More information is here

Creek Fest will be at Moore Park on July 6 starting at 6:30 p.m., and there will be performances by Dos Borrachos (Kevin Fowler and Roger Creager).
