The Falcon Art Gallery and the Mexican Consulate of Del Rio will be celebrating indigenous culture with an exhibit at 301 E. Garfield St. on Friday, Aug. 7, at 7 p.m.
The Falcon Art Gallery focuses on showcasing artists from Del Rio, cities around the state and other countries, while also displaying work created by Adrian Falcon and his family. This Friday’s exhibit will commemorate International Day of Indigenous Peoples, which takes place on Aug. 9. Food and refreshments will also be available at the gallery.
The event will be split both inside and outside the gallery. Art created by Falcon and inspired by the Otomi, an indigenous people from Hidalgo, Mexico, will be displayed inside. Falcon said the art he made for Friday’s exhibit is made of Petate palm leaves, which are being used as a canvas to present abstract art. The Petate palm leaves are an indigenous palm mat from Hidalgo, and Falcon added that a lot of people will be seeing this art for the first time.
Outside the gallery, there will be a live video presentation from Diana Elizabeth Zuniga, daughter of Falcon, talking about her indigenous culture and what art she is working on. Falcon said Paloma Villasenor Vargas, the Mexican consul in Del Rio, will also be present to talk about International Day of Indigenous People and the introduction of the nation-wide program called United Nations Organization, which focuses on protecting the culture of indigenous people.
