It’s less than 20 days before the man who killed their father walks out of jail a free man after killing a federal officer, and the murdered federal officers’ daughters are asking the community for help.
Jan 27, 1984, Rafael Calderon-Velasquez was part of a gang of four jewelry thieves and heroin addicts who abducted Del Rio resident and federal officer off of the Del Rio Port of Entry and later killed him near Eagle Pass. Calderon-Velasquez pled guilty to killing Latham.
He’s being paroled from a federal prison August 25.
“Mr. Latham’s daughters would like to thank Senator (Peter) Flores who’s supported the family,” said Sharon Ansick, Latham family spokesperson. “Senator Cornyn’s staff has forwarded some information to Senator Flores. However, more needs to be done to keep a cop killer from walking free.”
Ansick added that most of the people she’s talked to are outraged.
“At this time, we are asking people to step up and support the Latham family and the Customs family (where Latham worked) and write letters, let it be known we are outraged,” Ansick said.
She provided three addresses.
“Please write the parole commission and let them know this man shouldn’t be released,” she said. Calderon-Velasquez prison number, that should be included with any communication is 25356-080.
