Mayor Candidate Profile — Lazaro “Laz” Castro

Question #1: What in your experience, either personal or professional, makes you qualified to serve in the office of mayor?

“First, I have been employed by the City of Del Rio for almost 10 years with over eight years as a Division Head (Parks and Golf). Being in that position has provided me the privilege to attend meetings to determine our operational budget and what projects we can afford and move forward with.

“I truly believe that a seat in the dais needs to be occupied with those that understand the city operations, policies and procedures and can assist and educate those who occupy the other council seats to ensure a smoother operation to better serve our community.

“From a personal standpoint, I really enjoyed growing up Del Rio. I truly felt that I had everything I needed as a youth from the mall, downtown and the basketball court down the street from my childhood home on Garza St. I want to see the next generation and beyond enjoy the amenities that our community has to offer just like my generation and before did. For me, this isn’t about politics. It is continuing to serve my community at a higher level.”

Question #2: What is your vision for the office of mayor for the next four years?

“Should I be elected as the Mayor of Del Rio, my vision for the next four years is to have a united, not divided City Council which begins with building relationships that are built on trust and mutual understanding. While we all do have different upbringings and opinions, our primary mission is to be that voice for our community and be their representation.

“I also want to see a City Manager that was born and raised here in Del Rio and work beside Council for at least four years. If that can be accomplished, I truly believe that we can gain the trust of the community and begin to see Del Rio recover and prosper.”
