Minimal charges filed against bear killer

Texas Game Wardens have filed a case against the individual who killed the black bear Oct. 19 in Del Rio’s city limits.

The charges filed in Val Verde’s County’s Justice of the Peace courts are “Taking a protected state threatened non-game animal”.

The bear was shot in the early morning hours of Oct. 19. Texas Game Wardens turned the case in to county officials Oct. 26. The mother bear left a young cub behind, angering many in the community, who are supporting a drive to pay the $10,000 food tab for the cub

One member of the local legal community compared the charge to a traffic ticket. Early indications are the maximum the defendant faces is a $500 fine and no jail time.
