A 36-year-old Del Rio man was charged with felony burglary after he broke into a building and stole 10 pounds of fish fillets, police said.

Ruben Elias Sanchez, 609 Ave. H, was arrested at 9:05 a.m. on Sept. 15 and charged with the offense of burglary of a building, a state jail felony, according to an arrest report released recently by the Del Rio Police Department.

In an affidavit filed in the case, DRPD Officer Teresa Parrack wrote she was dispatched to The Solution, 600 E. Third St., at 8:07 a.m. Sept. 15 after police received a report about “a shirtless male subject covering his face attempting to make entry into the building.”

“Upon arrival, (I) observed an employee, identified as Denise Villanueva, step outside of the business and state, ‘He’s in the shed in the back.’ (I) made my way to the back of the building and observed a shed with a slightly opened door,” Parrack wrote.

The officer reported she opened the door to the shed and saw a man without a shirt holding a package of frozen fish in his hands. She said she ordered the man, later identified as Sanchez, out of the shed and detained him while she carried on with the investigation.

“Sanchez stated he was looking for work at the business, (I) ran Sanchez through Del Rio (PD) Communications and was advised Sanchez had active warrants,” Parrack wrote.

She noted DRPD Cpl. Trevor Snyder spoke with the owner of the Solution, identified as Jose Garza Romero, who told the officers he wished to pursue criminal charges against Sanchez.

Parrack said she placed Sanchez under arrest for the offense of burglary of a building.

“After Sanchez was taken into custody, officers and Romero went through the shed to ensure no other items were stolen. A car battery was located near the door which Sanchez had concealed and was not in its original location,” Parrack wrote.

In an incident report on the break-in, Parrack listed as stolen “two five-pound bags of white fish fillets, sealed in plastic bags and frozen.” The report does not list a dollar value of the frozen fish.

Justice of the Peace Pct. 1 Jesse James Treviño set a bond of $8,000 in the case against Sanchez.
