Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating a one-vehicle fatal crash that occurred on September 26, 2023, at approximately 9:46 p.m., on Spur 317 in Val Verde County.
Preliminary investigation revealed a DPS Trooper made a traffic stop on a 2005 Nissan silver Pathfinder. Trooper noticed that a Hispanic male ran from the vehicle and absconded into the brush. The driver evaded with his vehicle from US 277 and Spur 317.
Trooper pursued the silver Nissan SUV on Spur 317. The Nissan SUV continued at a high rate of speed. The Nissan SUV approached a curve and continued through the brush. The Nissan continued to evade Troopers through the brush. The Nissan SUV overturned due to the terrain.
All occupants were ejected from the vehicle near the highway. Due to injuries sustained, the driver Jesus Israel Villalobos from Georgia 19, of the Nissan SUV was pronounced deceased at the scene. The front passenger Edwin Alejandro Moreno from Georgia 20, was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced deceased at the scene. Rear passengers were all Mexican nationals: Gabino Carmona Terron, 30 (deceased at the scene), Benigno Marcelo Esteban, 38 (was taken to Val Verde Medical Center), Brenda Cardenas Ortiz, 25 (was taken to Val Verde Medical Center but later transported to San Antonio Military Medical Center), Luis Gerardo Alvarez Campos, 38 (was transported to San Antonio Military Medical Center).
DPS troopers will be investigating this fatal crash.
