Friday morning, Val Verde County Clerk Teresa Esther Chapoy said she expected a strong turnout of voters over the weekend.
Saturday certainly proved her right, as 519 voters turned out to cast their ballots, pushing the five-day total of persons voting early by personal appearance to 1,946. Saturday’s turnout included 189 Republicans and 330 Democrats casting ballots.
According to figures released by the county clerk’s office, turnout steadily increased heading into the weekend after moderate participation earlier in the week.
A total of 379 voters cast ballots Feb. 17, followed by 351 on Feb. 18 and 309 on Feb. 19. Participation rose again Feb. 20 with 388 voters before peaking Saturday.
Through five days of early voting, Democratic voters have cast 1,066 ballots compared to 880 Republican ballots.
Early voting continues today from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Del Rio Civic Center. Today marks the final weekend day of early voting.
Voters will then be able to cast ballots Monday, Feb. 23, through Friday, Feb. 27, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Early voting runs through the end of the week, with Election Day scheduled for Tuesday, March 3.
Chapoy previously encouraged residents to vote early to avoid lines and allow flexibility for voters’ schedules.
