Del Rio police began an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of a man whose body was found early today along U.S. Highway 277 in far south Del Rio.
Del Rio Police Department Capt. Hubert Smith, who heads the department’s criminal investigations division, told the 830 Times at the scene a driver traveling north on U.S. 277 into Del Rio called police between 6 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. today when the driver observed what he or she believed was a person lying in a concrete drainage channel off the northeast shoulder of the highway.
Smith said officers who responded to the site called in by the passerby discovered the body of a man.
Smith said Justice of the Peace Pct. 3 Pat Cole was called to the site to pronounce the man dead.
“Right now, we’re still trying to identify this individual,” Smith said.
Asked whether there were any indications the man had been murdered, Smith said, “We’re going to leave that (question) open until after the autopsy has been performed,” Smith said, adding the deceased man may have been killed by a vehicle as he walked along the roadway.
