Bonds totaling $15 million were set Friday in the cases of three women accused of murder in the fatal stabbing of a 32-year-old Del Rio woman Thursday.
Amaya Cookie Diaz, 19; Kitty Mia Diaz, 21; and Kyandra Renee Faz, 22, have each been charged with murder, a first-degree felony, in the death of Carolina Pena, 32.
According to criminal complaints filed in the case and obtained Friday by The 830 Times, Del Rio Police Department detectives were dispatched to Val Verde Regional Medical Center, 801 N. Bedell Ave., at 2:10 p.m. Thursday after the police department received a call for service regarding “a female patient who had reportedly been stabbed.”
In the complaint, DRPD Detective Darian Castro wrote police officers who went to the hospital spoke to witnesses who
told them “an altercation” involving Pena had taken place outside the residence at 801 E. 10th St.
Castro wrote DRPD officers went to the East 10th Street address and spoke to Faz.
“Faz informed officers that a female whom she identified as (Pena) had arrived at her residence looking to start a fight. Faz stated that at the same time, two of her friends, who were identified as Kitty Mia Diaz and Amaya Cookie Diaz, arrived on scene,” Castro wrote.
“While on scene, an altercation took place with Kyandra, Carolina, Amaya and Kitty. During the altercation, a knife was brandished and utilized to stab Carolina,” Castro wrote.
Castro wrote he made his way to the East 10th Street residence and spoke with DRPD Sgt. Trevor Snyder.
“Snyder further advised he was able to review footage from the residence of 801 E. 10th St., which had captured the entirety of the incident. Upon review of the video footage, Carolina was observed arriving at Kyandra’s residence and exiting a black Dodge pickup truck.
“Shortly after, a black Chrysler 300 arrives on scene, to which Amaya and Kitty exit and confront Carolina. Within the video footage, Amaya is observed exiting the front passenger seat of the vehicle and approaching Carolina.
“Within the video footage, Amaya is observed with an object believed to be a knife in her right hand. Amaya and Carolina get into an altercation, and Amaya is observed striking Carolina in the back, where blood can be observed on the back of her shirt,” Castro wrote.
The detective noted that in the video footage, Amaya can be seen wearing a red tank top and blue jeans, and Kitty is seen wearing a pink tank top and blue jeans.
“Kitty … subsequently begins physically assaulting Carolina. Within the video footage, Kyandra is also observed joining in the physical assault against Carolina,” Castro wrote.
A short time later, Castro wrote, all of the women separated and left the area.
Castro wrote that at 3:54 p.m. Thursday, police officers located Amaya Diaz’s black Chrysler 300 parked outside 322 W. Strickland St.
Castro wrote when officers and detectives arrived, they made contact with Kitty Mia Diaz, who told them her sister, Amaya Cookie Diaz, was inside the residence. Castro noted “they were no longer wearing the clothing seen in the video footage, and they had recently showered.”
The Diazes and Faz were arrested and taken to the police station for processing.
Pena was transferred from Val Verde Regional Medical Center to a San Antonio hospital.
Castro wrote detectives were notified at 9 p.m. Thursday by the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office that Pena “had succumbed to her injuries and passed away.”
Amaya Diaz, Kitty Diaz and Kyandra Faz appeared before Justice of the Peace Pct. 1 Jesse James Trevino at 9:50 a.m. Friday.
Trevino set bond at $5 million for each of the three defendants and noted all three requested a court-appointed attorney.
