The calendar for Del Rio and Ciudad Acuna is busy this weekend. Here’s some of the events on our radar:

Cajun Fest
The 24th annual Cajun Fest at Whitehead Memorial Museum takes place Saturday beginning at   p.m. at 1308 S. Main St., featuring crawfish, catfish, cold beer and live entertainment.

There are only a handful of tickets still available.

Running Las Vacas
The Running Las Vacas event is Friday through Sunday in Acuña, offering runners a chance to get gored or run over by a bull and many other activities, including a free concert by Kein Fowler.

Besides watching participants dodge bulls’ horns, the event offers a variety of family-friendly activities, including parades, cultural performances and live music. 

A highlight of this year’s festivities is a free concert by country

artist Kevin Fowler on April 5 at 8:30 PM in Plaza Benjamín Canales.

According to Ciudad Acuna Chamber of Commerce officials, they hope the event draws about 15,000 visitors from Coahuila and West Texas.

Parking will also be provided on the U.S. side and people will be able to take a shuttle for $5 to the event. The shuttle will run every 30 minutes to an hour, depending on demand.

Kevin Fowler, a Texas Country artist is a Texas-born singer-songwriter known for his high-energy performances and chart-topping Red Dirt hits like “Beer, Bait and Ammo.”

Miss Val Verde
The Miss Val Verde Pageant is Saturday night at the Red Oak Ballroom in the Del Rio Civic Center. Doors open at 4:15 and festivities kickoff at 5.

Slow Art Day

People in Del Rio are invited to visit five art galleries on Saturday, April 5, and appreciate the
artwork there in an entirely new way – slowly.

Participating galleries will open their doors from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for “Slow Art Day,”
an international event whose stated mission is “helping more people discover for
themselves the joy of looking at and loving art.”

Local galleries involved in Slow Art Day are The Firehouse Gallery, 120 E. Garfield Ave.; the Lee-Bunch Studio Gallery, 100 W. Greenwood St.; the Casa De La Cultura, 302 Cantu St.; Marcos Mares Art Studio, 205 E. Ogden St. and David Forks Fine Art, 401 Griner St.

Earth Day Kickoff
The City of Del Rio is hosting its Earth Day Kickoff at the Del Rio Civic Center’s Urban Oasis on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon.

The event will include rock painting, a table for coloring, seed planting, potato sack race plus the City of Del Rio will hand out kites and stickers to children. 

Del Rio’s animal control will be on-site with pets available for adoption.

A number of organizations and city departments will have tables offering people information. 

Autism Awareness Day
The Mexican Consulate and community partners will host Autism Awareness Day on Saturday at the Del Rio Civic Center’s Pecan Ballroom, promoting education and inclusion.

Paloma VillaSenor Vargar, the Mexican Consulate who’s one of the coordinators of the event, said this event aims to raise awareness about autism within the community.

Cookbook signing
Two local food entrepreneurs who have developed a national following for their businesses 

Acuña’s author, photographer and social media influencer Dora Ramirez has produced a plant-based cookbook that Isela Hernandez, founder of HERNÁN, is featuring and promoting under her brand.

Soccer Camp
Del Rio-Laughlin Youth Soccer Association will run a youth soccer camp on Saturday, April 5, offering kids a day of skill-building and fun.
