Filing began Nov. 13 for 12 county elected positions and one state district judgeship that will be on the ballot of the March 2022 Democratic Party Primary Election in Val Verde County.

The following positions will go before voters: 83rd Judicial District Judge, County Judge, County Court-At-Law Judge, District Clerk, County Clerk, County Treasurer, County Surveyor, County Commissioner Pct. 2, County Commission Pct. 4, Justice of the Peace Pct. 1, Justice of the Peace Pct. 2, Justice of the Peace Pct. 3 and Justice of the Peace Pct. 4.

Val Verde County voters will first vote in either the Democratic Party or the Republican Party Primary Election on March 1, 2022. The victors in each of those primary races will then go on the ballot for the November 2022 election.

Val Verde County Democratic Party Chair Rosalinda Hernandez on Wednesday told the 830 Times nine candidates have already filed their applications for a place on the Democratic Party Primary Election ballot.

Candidates for the state district judge position file their application directly with the state party.

Seven of the nine candidates who have already filed are seeking re-election to positions they currently hold.

The incumbents who have already filed for re-election include County Judge Lewis G. Owens Jr., District Clerk Jo Ann Cervantes, County Clerk Generosa “Janie” Ramon, County Commissioner Pct. 2 Juan Carlos Vazquez, County Commissioner Pct. 4 Gustavo “Gus” Flores, Justice of the Peace Pct. 1 Jesse James Treviño and Justice of the Peace Pct. 4 Hilda Castillo Lopez.

Challengers have so far emerged for only one seat: Precinct 4 County Commissioner.

Two persons have filed for applications for a place on the March 2022 primary ballot to challenge Flores, the incumbent.

They are Alfredo “Fred” Carranza Jr. and Juan Francisco DeHoyos.

Carranza is the manager of Brown Nissan of Del Rio and currently serves as a member of the Del Rio City Council. DeHoyos is a retired county employee, where he worked as a precinct foreman.

Filing for a place on the primary ballot ends Dec. 13, Hernandez said.

She said prospective candidates could pick up their applications for a place on the ballot with her or at the county clerk’s office, located on the ground floor of the Val Verde County Courthouse, 400 Pecan St.

Hernandez said she is ready to assist prospective candidates who have questions about the paperwork. There is also a filing fee for each office.

“I am available to help them and guide them through the paperwork, if they need it,” Hernandez said.

She asked prospective candidates to call her at (830) 734-5313.
