Val Verde County hosted its annual Christmas Movie Night at the Val Verde County Courthouse Lawn at 400 Pecan St. on Friday, Dec. 15.

Community members and employees came together Friday evening to give back to hand out free hot chocolate and cookies as they enjoyed the 90’s classic “Home Alone.”

Del Rio citizens were able to bring their lawn chairs and blankets and watch the movie, which was projected onto a screen set up on the side of the courthouse.

County Human Resources Director Juanita Barrera said this is the third year the county has been having this event for the community. She said the event was put together by County Judge Lewis G. Owens Jr. and the county commissioners.

“Everybody has a really good time,” Barrera said. “We usually have about 1,000 people show up, and we’re hoping that will happen today.”

Barrera said the vendors were not charged for attending and the event helps the businesses in the community.

Local business HTeaO had a booth and sold beverages inspired by the holiday season. Gutierrez Novelty was selling light-up toys and Santa Claus hats at their booth. Food trucks lined Pecan Street in front of the historic courthouse.

County Commissioner Pct. 2 Juan Carlos Vasquez stopped by before the movie began to give welcome and thanks to everyone who showed up. Vasquez said this event was a team effort and has been a wonderful event in the past.
