Council members were informed at Tuesday’s regular meeting about updates to the “Del Rio Days” advocacy trips to Austin, Texas, and Washington D.C.
Elected and business leaders from the area make plans every year to meet face-to-face with state and federal elected representatives and state and federal agency administrators as part of the trips.
Early in the year, city council members discuss the travel dates for the trips and choose the council members who will attend.
Separate meetings have occurred to discuss more details about the trips with local governmental entities, including Val Verde County, Val Verde Regional Medical Center and the San Felipe Del Rio Consolidated Independent School District, as well as with Laughlin Air Force Base and the local Military Affairs Association.
Assistant City Manager Manuel Chavez on Tuesday briefed council members on updates for the federal trip, which was planned for the week of March 3 through March 6, and the state trip, which was planned for March 31 through April 3.
Chavez said the federal community advocacy trip has been postponed after further discussions were held with local agencies. He did not mention the reasons for the trip being rescheduled.
“It was best that, at this point, we postpone that trip due to several factors, and we can clear up (those factors) in the next few months and recommend a new date for the federal advocacy trip,” Chavez said.
Chavez also spoke about the state advocacy trip and said it is still scheduled for the week of March 31 through April 3.
“We are continuing to develop that agenda for the state trip and schedule meetings with the appropriate state agencies and elected officials so that we will be able to continue to bring the city’s priorities to Austin,” Chavez said.
No further questions were asked, and the council continued with the next topic on the agenda.
